The design is based upon a facet of the story of
A Dance With Dragons. In which Arya describes several coins, one of which is the Volantis Honor that is no bigger than a seven kingdoms penny, and bearing a crown on one side and a death's head on the other. The text on the reverse is High Valarian and reads:
elyr anogro eli vali. Which translates into "The First Men of the First Blood". This is how the Volantin describe themselves, prideful of being the earliest colony from fabled Valyria before the Fall. The crown bears an elephant sigil of the ruling power of the triarchy of Volantis that has held the majority for the past 300 years.
